Katy Students Named Finalists In 2017 Adopt-A-Beach Children’s Art Contest

Seven Katy students were selected as finalists in the 2017 Texas General Land Office’s children’s art contest, Adopt-A-Beach Treasures of the Texas Coast, as announced by Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush:

  • Ailsa Cheng, 9, a third-grader at Roosevelt Alexander Elementary;
  • Daisy Chen, 7, second-grader at Williams Elementary School;
  • Eileen Chi, 7, second-grader at Pattison Elementary School;
  • Evan Feng, 6, a kindergartener at Hanjie Arts Center;
  • Eric Zhang, 9, third-grader at Roosevelt Alexander Elementary School;
  • Jessica Chai, 12, sixth-grader at Beckendorff Junior High School; and
  • Victoria Zhang, 12, sixth-grader at Tays Junior High School.

The grand prize winner, selected from the 40 overall winners, was Debbie Bong, a sixth-grader from Ridgeview Middle School in Round Rock.

All 40 winners will receive a ticket to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi, a ticket to the Houston Zoo, two all-day passes to Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels, prizes and a certificate of recognition from the Texas General Land Office. The artwork of the 40 winners will appear on the cover of the 2018 Adopt-A-Beach calendar, which will be distributed statewide. The artwork of all winners also will be on public display in the South-Central Gallery of the Texas Capitol May 23-31 for all visitors to appreciate.

More than 3,200 entries were submitted statewide. The annual competition encourages school children to learn more about the Texas coast and express what they’ve learned through their art. Open to grades K-6 across Texas, the contest motivates thousands of young artists each year.
