Brookwood Proud, Texas Proud

The Brookwood Community hit an all-time record in fundraising of $1.5 million at its recent biennial Benefit Lunch featuring Governor Greg Abbott as the keynote speaker. Close to 700 attendees enjoyed lunch at the “Brookwood Proud, Texas Proud” themed event held at the Omni Houston Hotel to benefit adults with disabilities that live and work at the Brookwood Community.

The biggest surprise of this year’s event was the announcement that the $750,000 that was raised for the lunch would be matched with a $750,000 donation made by the Robert and Janice McNair Foundation and the Houston Texans Foundation. The lunch was executed with an impressively low 8 percent expense to revenue ratio, resulting in 92 percent of the funds raised going directly to support the Brookwood Citizens.

Stephanie and Brad Tucker, Nancy and Steve Beasley, and Melinda and Sam Stubbs served as Co-Chairs for the fundraising event. Doris and Terry Looper and Paula and Rusty Walter were recognized as Honorary Co-Chairs. Former news anchor Steve Smith emceed the luncheon and the talented Brookwood Handbell Choir provided the entertainment. Charlie Stubbs, a day program Citizen at Brookwood, gave the invocation. Other notable attendees included First Lady of Texas Cecilia Abbott, State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, former First Lady Barbara Bush, Susan Baker, Cal and Hannah McNair, Ruth Smith, Holly Alvis, Jim and Linda McIngvale, Deborah Duncan, Mindy Hildebrand, Tony and Cynthia Petrello, Yvonne and David Streit, Kelli Weinzierl, Patty Biggio, Ginger Blanton, and Mike and Gracy Hall.

Initially started by Brookwood’s Volunteer Association, the Benefit Lunch is in its 16th year and has raised millions of dollars for the Brookwood Community over the years. As a nonprofit organization, Brookwood Community relies on the support of events like this to fund the work programs and residential homes that serve the over 225 disabled adults.
