 Jazz With A Latin Flair

The Katy ISD Education Foundation hosted Jazz with a Latin Flair on April 24. Held in partnership with the Katy Jazz Festival V.I.P reception, the event benefited the foundation and its Inspiring Imagination teacher grant program. Last year, in its inaugural grant cycle, the foundation awarded more than $88,000 to 117 Katy ISD teachers for inspiring, innovative classroom projects that have been implemented this school year. The foundation’s second grant cycle began this past November with grants awarded to teachers in May 2014.

Jazz with a Latin Flair featured an evening of jazz music performed by The Mike Vax Sextet. The group has performed for jazz festivals, conventions, cruise ships, hotels, resorts, high school and college concerts and dances, The Prescott Jazz Summit Educational Outreach Project, and jazz societies all over the United States. Leader Mike Vax is very active in the music education field. He has performed concerts and workshops in both the classical and jazz idioms at more than 2,500 high schools, colleges and universities all over the world, over the past 40 years. He is also an international performing artist for the Getzen Musical Instrument Company.
