New Mexico Resort Offers Snowy Fun For The Whole Family

By Elizabeth Anthony

Angel Fire Resort, located in the southern Rocky Mountains of New Mexico, has been named one of the “Top 25 Best Family Friendly Ski Resorts in America” by Vacation Guides of America. The resort opened in 1966 as a small ski destination in Northern New Mexico. Since then, the destination has grown into a four-season resort offering a memorable Rocky Mountain experience for families, outdoor enthusiasts and groups.

Angel Fire Resort is the place to be. Located 8,600 feet above sea level in the Southern Rockies, with a summit of 10,677 feet and views of Wheeler Peak (the highest point in New Mexico), visitors can enjoy an abundance of snow activities.

SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING

For skiers and snowboarders, Angel Fire Mountain offers more than 560 acres of terrain with rolling cruisers, gladed tree runs, three terrain parks and one of New Mexico’s top ski and snowboard schools. Average snowfall annually is 210 inches. For beginners, there are 16 runs; for intermediate, 38 runs; for experts, 22 runs. To accommodate your experience and give you convenient mountain access, the resort has seven lifts.

After dark, the mountain lights up. But just because the sun goes to bed doesn’t mean you have to. The resort offers night skiing and snowboarding on the lower front side of the mountain. The 50 acres of lit terrain includes beginner, intermediate and free-style slopes from 4-8 p.m. on select nights.

The resort offers ski and snowboard lessons for every age and ability level. Lesson packages are established for first-timers, for those who just need to brush up or for those who are ready to tackle more difficult slopes with more confidence.

Several children’s lessons are available for every age and ability level. The Children’s Ski School includes a full hot lunch for full day lessons.

Additionally, when your child enrolls at the resort’s ski/snowboard school, you can feel confident knowing that they are enjoying the smallest class sizes in the region due to caps on class size. The kids’ instructors are all experienced and certified, and the children’s director and supervisors are in the field monitoring each child’s progress. And to ensure peace of mind, every child is equipped with Flaik GPS technology, enabling parents to know where their child is on the mountain in real time.

OFF THE SLOPES

Off the slopes, the adventure continues at the Polar Coaster Tubing Hill and the Nordic Center. If less vertical space is what you seek, the Nordic Center offers more than 9 miles of groomed, classic and skate cross-country ski trails. Snowshoeing is also allowed on these trails. Nordic skiing and snowshoeing allow you to see some of the best views Angel Fire has to offer.

For those with the need for speed, the Polar Coaster is a three-lane, 900-foot-long tubing hill for family fun featuring rollers and banks. The fun continues after dark, when the track is lit. Tubing is offered in 1.5 hour blocks and is $25 per person.

Sledding is also available at a snow play hill at the Nordic Center outside the Country Club. For safety, the sledding hill is reserved for kids 12 and younger only.

Free shuttle service is offered between the Lodge and the Nordic Center so visitors can experience any of the resort’s activities with added convenience.

Angel Fire Resort offers several lodging options to relax and get a good night’s rest after a long day in the Moreno Valley.
