Classic And Organic Shapes Mix With Pastel And Colorful Elements

By Mara Soloway

So many beautiful choices in home furnishings are available to homeowners this spring. Whether you plan to work with an interior design firm to create a new look for rooms in your home or whether you will be adding several new pieces to your current interiors, you’ll be pleased at all aspects of the appearance, the bearing and the effect of this season’s offerings.

We consulted one of the most renown furnishings trade shows, High Point Market, which is held twice a year in central North Carolina. If you can’t find it at High Point, it probably doesn’t exist. Up-and-coming interior designers have scrutinized the market and what’s in store – and in stores – for residential shoppers in their Winter/Spring 2015-16 Style Report. And we’re happy to report it’s all beautiful and must-have! We’ve also consulted several other respected style specialists for their take on furnishings that homeowners will value and appreciate.

In this month’s issue of Lifestyles & Homes, we’re sharing the softer side of the latest trends: the Pantone color picks, the artisanal, the organic, classic elegance and colorful whimsy. In the April issue, we’ll show you the furniture trends in geometrics, metal, wood, plexiglass and other materials.

Whatever pieces you add to your home, it all adds up to defining your personal style and showing your flair with interior furnishings.

Blues and Pinks

For the first time ever, the Pantone Color of the Year combines two choices: the cool tranquil blue Serenity and the warmer, embracing Rose Quartz. They are harmonious, ideal choices for upholstery and for rugs, offering an antidote to the stress of modern life. The colors provide a soothing base for more dramatic florals and global fabrics to show off.

Furniture manufacturer Hancock & Moore has carried the two pastel colors through in upholstery that ranges from luxe leathers to rich velvets, resulting in a light and airy look in both more formal pieces, such as the Kyra Chair and the Arnett Settee and more modern, such as the Jessica Charles Estate Chair.

A Sense of Artisanal Craftsmanship

One of the more exciting new trends is the creative, artistic revival in furnishings and accessories made by highly skilled artisanal furniture designers. The special elements of their work give homeowners unique pieces made with with striking attention to detail. The one-of-a-kind feel transforms the ordinary into extraordinary, visually compelling spaces.

“Handmade items or crafted pieces are also strong players, offering a nod to a more organic way of making things. One can see that a piece was created by another human and did not roll off a conveyor belt,” noted interior designer Jonathan Legate in the Style Report. “Subtle imperfections and variances are the hallmarks of pieces made by hand. Like nature, the perfection is found in the imperfection.”

Channeling the artisan look and feel are several new Bernhardt works of beauty, including the Bennison Cocktail Ottoman, the Alisa Cocktail table and the Antiquarian Upholstered Bed.

Organic Shapes

As relevant as artisanal designs, the organic syle is one of the strongest trends seen in many years and one that provides real lasting quality. For furniture, it has a meaning in addition to natural or earth friendly materials: organic furniture forms have the softer, more sensuous forms found in nature. Corners and planes have been subtly eased and lines curved.

Classic Elegance and Repose

Homeowners will be seeing beautiful decorative elements and furnishings that are without pretense. The loveliness created from pieces in this category offers color palettes and furniture that relaxes the eyes and the mind. Coordinating paint, textiles, furniture upholstry and wood finishes accentuate the structure, shapes and forms of pieces, proving that elegance and refinement never go out of style.

The New Bohemian from Universal is for people who love a coherent mix of elements, shapes and textures of traditional design with a twist.

Similarly, the Universal Dogwood bedroom suite captures the traditional charm of a Southern home and the dogwood trees surrounding it, with its nod to antique furniture you would find inside.

Criteria by Bernhardt offers refined, luxurious details in this collection, including silver metal details, such as that of the metal headboard and footboard frame of the Criteria Upholstered Bed.

A Bit of Whimsy and Color

Along with organic and artisanal pieces, consumers are also embracing a whimsical approach that brings a lighter side of style and adds interest and intrigue to predictable spaces. According to the High Point Style Report, “whimsical touches are showing up in bright, saturated color and unusual shapes, and a touch of the unexpected. A sense of style and a sense of humor can go hand in hand.”
