MD ANDERSON EDUCATES ON CANCER PREVENTION THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH PGA TOUR

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, through a newly announced relationship with the PGA TOUR, is expanding its efforts to reduce cancer risk among the golf community and the general public through educational efforts. As the Official Cancer Center of the PGA TOUR, MD Anderson will initially focus on sun safety and sharing cancer prevention messages through TV, online and print media, as well as on-site activations at several tournaments this year. Over the next three years, this relationship will reach millions of people, and public messaging will expand to include education on cancers caused by smoking and tobacco use.

Ranked as one of the nation’s top two hospitals for cancer care for the past 25 years in U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Hospitals” survey, MD Anderson has one mission: to end cancer through patient care, research, prevention and education. The Houston-based institution has treated 1 million patients since 1944. It pioneered the multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment, bringing experts from many disciplines together to prepare treatment plans for its patients. Many of the treatment protocols developed at MD Anderson are considered the standard of care worldwide.

“MD Anderson recognizes the importance of public education in our mission to eliminate cancer,” said Tom Buchholz, M.D., executive vice president and physician-in-chief at MD Anderson. “Through this new relationship with the PGA TOUR, our goal is to increase public awareness of sun safety habits so people can act to reduce their risk of skin cancer, among other diseases. Nearly 5 million people receive treatment for skin cancer in the U.S. every year. Since skin cancer is the most common malignancy – and is the most preventable – public knowledge is essential to ending this disease.”

Throughout the next three years at select PGA TOUR and Champions Tour events, MD Anderson will provide spectator enhancements, including free sunscreen stations and shaded areas throughout the courses where fans can take reprieve from the sun. Spectators will also receive interactive educational materials, SPF 30 lip balm and sunglasses. The signature element of this collaboration, MD Anderson’s Strike Through Cancer Wall, will be featured at select tournaments, empowering people to show support for cancer survivors or their loved ones by signing their names and messages of hope.

“We are extremely pleased and proud to announce this relationship with the premier cancer center in the world and to give MD Anderson a new platform to inform fans and viewers about cancer prevention and detection,” said Tom Wade, chief commercial officer of the PGA TOUR. “The PGA TOUR takes great pride in enriching the lives of others, and this relationship with MD Anderson provides us a wonderful opportunity to partner with its 20,000 cancer fighters on the important work they do every day.”

Recently, representatives from MD Anderson, the PGA TOUR, Shell Oil Company and the Shell Houston Open held a press conference announcing this collaboration. “From one Houston enterprise to another, Shell Oil Company – and the Shell Houston Open – welcomes MD Anderson to the PGA TOUR community,” said Marvin Odum,
president of Shell Oil Company. “Our relationship with the institution extends back more than a decade, and this new collaboration is very powerful, potentially even lifesaving.
Our goals are closely aligned – to better the community through education – and we look forward to working with them to make cancer history.”

MD Anderson will begin its on-site activation at Houston’s two area Tour events, the Shell Houston Open and the Champions Tour’s Insperity Invitational in The Woodlands. (April 27-May 3).

MOODY GARDENS GOLF COURSE AMONG TOP IN STATE

With its stunning views, green fairways and gulf breeze, Moody Gardens Golf Course has become one of the most popular municipal golf courses in Texas. Since undergoing a $16 million renovation in 2008, the island course has earned numerous honors, including “Recommended by TripAdvisor” status. GolfNow also ranked Moody Gardens as the third-best course in the Greater Houston area earlier this year.

When Moody Gardens took over management of the Galveston Island Public Course, the elevations were raised, new irrigation and drainage systems were added and it was reseeded in paspalum, a salt-tolerant grass. It was the first course in the continental United States to be seeded with paspalum, and uses effluent water from the City of Galveston to water the grounds as a part of the conservation efforts that are a part of the Moody Gardens mission.

“Recommended by TripAdvisor” stickers are only given to attractions with greater than a three-star rating on the popular website. Since 2011, Moody Gardens Golf Course has an average rating of 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor, which averages more than 50 million unique visitors a month and features more than 60 million reviews. Among the reviews, Moody Gardens Golf Course was called “Beautiful,” “Top Notch,” and “The Best Muni in Texas.”

GolfNow’s ranking was based on ratings and reviews from thousands of its website’s visitors. The site’s users have given Moody Gardens an average rating of 4.5 out of 5.
